The Pelham had attachments for two sets of reins, one near the mouthpiece (snaffle effect) and one at the end of the shank (curb effect). These reins have similar action to the curb and bradoon reins in the double bridle, although the signals are not as distinct. Horses whose mouth conformation is such that double bridles are uncomfortable may work well in Pelhams.
